And Dangerous to Know.
[Henry Gamadge]
First published in book form in 1949.
A youngish woman from a wealthy family, leading a rather blighted, circumscribed life, disappears. No one can understand how she had any opportunity for the kinds of entanglement that could lead to disappearance. Talmadge’s connections with the mystery are tenuous at best, but nevertheless he solves the mystery. With some amusing characterizations. Clara, as usual, is offstage. Written in 1949, perhaps set a year earlier; military experiences are very much, as a matter of course, in people’s backgrounds.
One of the few Gamadge mysteries not reprinted by Berkley in the 60's.
