Unexpected Night.
[Henry Gamadge]
First published in book form in March 1940.
The first Gamadge mystery, set in a summer resort community in the coast of Maine - Ogunquit is somewhere nearby. Listed under "Books Published Today" in the New York Times March 7, 1940, p. 28. This was runner up in the first Mary Roberts Rinehart Mystery Novel Prize contest; Frank Gruber's "The French Key" was another runner up; the winner was "I Wanted to Murder" by Clarissa Fairchild Cushman.
Reviewed in the NYT Book Review March 10th, 1940 page 102: The title - so happily portenteou and delightfully grim - is from Thomas Lovell Bedoes: "Eventful unexpected night, which finishes a row of plotting days". And the story fulfills all that phrase’s implications. The author is a writer of light verse who has not hitherto essay ed this type of light fiction. but this novel has won her honorable mention in the Mary Robets Rinehart mystery contest, and with her skill and sit and suavity we hope she is in this field to stay.
